SMSU Softball Plays in Nebraska-Omaha Classic
Erin Dickhausen is second on the team with a .373 battting average. Dickhausen broke the school record for stolen bases last weekend.

MARSHALL, MINN.: Southwest Minnesota State University will travel to Omaha, Neb., this weekend to play five games in the University of Nebraska-Omaha Classic. The Mustangs will start play on Saturday, Mar. 29 facing Northwest Missouri State at 9 a.m., then playing South Dakota at 11 a.m. and will finish with Pittsburg State at 3 p.m. On Sunday, Mar. 30 SMSU faces Missouri Western at 9 a.m. and then finish the tournament playing Nebraska-Omaha at 11 a.m.
Records:
• Southwest Minnesota State has an overall record of 10-6.
• South Dakota are 7-8 overall.
• Pittsburg State has a 12-13 overall record.
• Northwest Missouri State are currently 13-7 ... the Bearcats play a doubleheader on Mar. 26 against Central Oklahoma.
• Missouri Western is 15-12 overall ... will play a doubleheader against University of Central Missouri on Mar. 27 before traveling to the UNO classic.
• Nebraska-Omaha currently have a 18-3 overall record ... the Mavericks play a doubleheader against MSU Mankato on Mar. 28 ... UNO is ranked No. 3 in the nation.

Amanda Johnson ranks in the NCAA national statisitcs released on Wed., Mar. 26. Johnson is ranked 10th in ERA (0.75), 35th in strikeouts per seven innings (7.7) and 89th in victories (7.0). As a team the Mustangs ranks 44th in triples per game (0.31) and 64th in win/loss percentage (.625).
2008 NSIC Player of the Week:
Junior Amanda Johnson was named NSIC Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, Mar. 18. It marks the first time this season and seventh time in Johnson’s career that she has been named NSIC Pitcher of the Week.
Johnson earned a 3-1 record on the mound while having a 0.20 ERA last week as the Mustangs went 5-3 at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. Johnson pitched 35.1 innings and had 43 strikeouts while allowing only two runs and 23 hits. She broke the SMSU single game strikeout record against Central Missouri on Monday, March 10 as she struck out 17 batters.
Junior Jessica Paczosa was named NSIC Player of the Week on Monday, Mar. 10. This marks the first time in Paczosa's career that she has been named NSIC Player of the Week.
The second baseman had a .400 batting average in the first four games on Saturday and Sunday at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. Paczosa had four hits, including two doubles and a triple in those four games. She also led SMSU with six runs batted in and had a slugging percentage of .800 and a fielding percentage of 1.000 through four games. In addition, she was a perfect 3-for-3 on stolen bases and drew four walks.
Truman State Game Recaps:
• The Mustangs played a four game series against Truman State in Kirksville, Mo. this past week.
• Day 1: SMSU earned a sweep over Truman State on Thursday afternoon, winning game one 2-0 in eight innings and earning a 5-4 victory in game two.
In game one, SMSU rallied as the eighth inning began with the international tiebreaker rule placing and runner at second. SMSU’s Erin Dickhausen then led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on the throw, while also advancing the other runner to third. Amanda Burkhart then hit a two run double giving SMSU its two runs.
Amanda Johnson earned the win on the mound pitching all eight innings with six strikeouts.
In game two, the Mustangs earned thrilling a 5-4 victory. SMSU scored three runs in the fourth inning as Nicole Kelley hit her first career home run to drive in three runs. Again in the sixth inning, Kelley came through with a big hit having a RBI single to tie the score at 4-4 as she drove in Opatz who led off the inning with a single. In the seventh inning, SMSU started off with two singles from Laetsch and Dickhausen. Dickhausen would later score the winning run off a sacrifice fly by Amanda Opatz.
Angie Rohne got the start on the mound and pitched 3.1 innings while scattering five hits and having one strikeout before Amanda Johnson came in to earn the win on the mound pitching 3.2 innings. Johnson allowed just three hits and struck out five batters.
• Day 2:
SMSU’s Andrea Fennern's two run homer in the fifth led the Mustangs to a 5-3 victory over Truman State in game one on Friday and in game two the Mustangs were defeated 10-3.
The Mustangs started off the first game strong scoring two runs in the first inning. Jessica Paczosa and Meaghan Laetsch started with back-to-back singles which was followed by a single from Amanda Burkhart later in in the inning earning two RBI. SMSU went up 3-0 in the top of the fourth as Fennern lead off the inning with a single and was later drove in by Paczosa. In the fifth, Burkhart reached base on a single and then with two outs Fennern hit a home run to left bring bringing in two runs for the win.
Johnson earned the win on the mound pitching a complete game with six strikeouts. She improved her record to 7-2 overall.
In game two, Truman State had 16 hits for the win. SMSU scored early having two runs in the first and one run in the second inning. In the first inning, Amanda Opatz had a single to drive in the first two runs, while in the second inning freshman Katie Turner hit her first collegiate home run to score SMSU third and final run.
SMSU's Angie Rohne got the start on the mound pitching two innings while allowing five hits. Freshman Sara Silke pitched four innings and had two strikeouts while allowing 11 hits.
2008 NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll:
The SMSU softball team was picked to finish first in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Poll.
The Mustangs won the NSIC two years ago and were league co-champions last season with a 16-2 NSIC mark. SMSU received seven first place votes and totaled 87 points. Winona State, co-champions with the Mustangs last season, was picked to finish second as it tallied three first place votes and a total of 84 points. Concordia-St. Paul was picked third in the league with 67 points followed ever so closely by the University of Mary with 66 (complete poll found of the side of this page).
SMSU’s senior catcher, Erin Dickhausen was named NSIC Preseason Co-Player of the Year along with Meghan Ward, a junior from the University of Mary. SMSU’s Amanda Johnson was named NSIC Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

• Amanda Opatz led the team with a.362 batting average while Dickhausen led the team with 55 hits, 40 RBI and a .665 slugging percentage, hitting 10 home runs.
2007 All-Region Honors:
SMSU’s catcher Erin Dickhausen was named first-team 2007 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II All-Region, while pitcher Amanda Johnson was named second team NFCA All-Region. This marks the second time each have received this accolade. In 2006, Dickhausen earned First Team NFCA All-Region honors while Johnson was named second team, which marked the first Mustangs to ever receive Division II All-Region honors.
Johnson and Dickhausen were named to the Daktronics All-North Central Region First Team, while junior shortstop Amanda Opatz and sophomore first baseman Amanda Tucci were both named to the second team. The Daktronics All-Region squad is selected by the sports information directors of the North Central Region. It was the first year that Daktronics sponsored an all-region softball team.
2007 NSIC Softball All-Conference Team
SMSU, NSIC regular season Co-Champions, took home three of the four specialty awards and had six players named first team all-conference.
Erin Dickhausen was named NSIC Player of the Year, Amanda Johnson was named NSIC Pitcher of the Year and Shawn Semler was named NSIC Coach of the Year. This marks the second consecutive year that Semler and Johnson have won their awards. The six members of the All-Conference First Team include; Amanda Tucci, Jessica Paczosa, Amanda Opatz, Jessica Donoho, along with Johnson and Dickhausen.

Amanda Opatz: Ranks sixth in career batting average (.350), seventh in career slugging percentage (.509), fourth in hits (176), tied for sixth in career triples (9), fourth in career home runs (12), fourth in total bases (256), and seventh in career stolen bases (28). Amanda Tucci: Second in career home runs (15) and ninth in slugging percentage (.492). Jessica Paczosa: Ranks first in career times hit by pitch (16).
