INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Southwest Minnesota State baseball team and several individuals finished high in the final NCAA Division II baseball national statistics released earlier this month.
The SMSU offense finished the season ranking third in slugging percentage (.590), fifth in batting average (.365), seventh in home runs per game (1.42), 16th in doubles per game (2.44), 17th in scoring (8.9) and 37th in fielding percentage (.963). The Mustang pitching staff finished the season ranked 39th in strikeouts per nine innings (7.7)
Individually, senior outfielder
Derek West ranked 48th in batting average (.417), 67th in on-base percentage and 67th in slugging percentage (.701).
Junior first baseman
Andrew Kinney ranked fourth in sacrifice flies (8), 10th in home runs per game (0.4), 13th in slugging percentage (.803), 21st in home runs (17), 32nd in RBI?per game (1.28), 45th in runs per game (1.21) and 66th in batting average (.408).
Junior third baseman
Matt Bauer ended the season ranked 21st in home runs per game (0.33), 32nd in slugging percentage (.756), 51st in home runs (14), 32nd in RBI per game (1.29) and 91st in batting average (.397).
Senior outfielder
Jake Munsch finished 88th in batting average (.398), while junior outfielder
Derick Swenson was 13th in runs per game (1.33).
The Mustang pitching staff had three individuals also ranked among the top 100. Junior right-hander
Adam Schrader was 30th in strikeouts per nine innings (10.0) and 74th for hits allowed per nine innings (7.76). Sophomore left-hander
Curtis Smith was 97th in victories (7), while junior right-hander
Tyler Paulson was 60th in saves (5).
Southwest Minnesota State finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 28-15 and made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA?Central Region Tournament.
