SMSU will start Northern Sun Intercollegiate action when they take on  Concordia-St. Paul, Saturday at noon, and St. Cloud State on Sunday at 1  p.m.

The Match-Ups: Wednesday will mark the first meeting between SMSU  and Minot State.  The series between SMSU and Concordia-St. Paul began  in 1999 however when the Mustangs defeated the Bears 7-0. Since then,  SMSU has maintained an 8-4-1 record against Concordia.  The teams last  played each other Sept. 27 2009 in St. Paul where Concordia handed SMSU a  5-1 loss. St. Cloud and SMSU have met 14 times; a series which began in  1996.   SMSU has won two of the 14 meetings between the two teams, and  last played the Huskies on Sept. 25, 2009 when St. Cloud won the match  2-1. 

Last Time Out: SMSU opened their regular season on  Saturday, Sept. 4, when they took on Colorado-Colorado Springs. UCCS  defeated the Mustangs 2-0. Josi Talbot scored the first goal for UCCS in  the 20th minute with assists from Kristin Preble and Saenz. The second  goal came from Saenz in the 70th minute with assists from Candice  Buckles and Meghan Royer.

ARSHALL, Minn.- Julia Saenz scored a goal and had an assist for Colorado-Colorado Springs in its 2-0 victory over Southwest Minnesota State&rsquo;s soccer team.  Saturday night&rsquo;s match was SMSU&rsquo;s season opener.  
Josi Talbot scored the first goal for UCCS in the 20th minute with an assists from Kristin Preble and Saenz. The second goal came from Saenz in the 70th minute with assists from Candice Buckles and Meghan Royer.

Setting the Scene: The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team (0-0, 0-0 NSIC) will open its 2010 season Saturday against Colorado-Colorado Springs at 7 p.m. at Mattke Field at the Regional Event Center. 

Series notes:  Saturday&rsquo;s contest with Colorado-Colorado Springs will be the second meeting between the two teams which first met in 2008. In their previous match-up SMSU traveled to Colorado Springs where UCCS defeated the Mustangs 1-0. 

Last time out:  The Mustangs earned an exhibition win Saturday at Mattke Field when they defeated Bethel 3-1. MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University soccer  team was victorious in its first showing of the young 2010 season. The  Mustangs defeated Bethel University 3-1 at Mattke Field this evening.  The Mustangs fell behind early but were able to make the comeback  scoring two goals in the second half to overcome the Royals. 
 
Kelly Fitzgerald (F, 5-7, Jr., Marshalltown, Iowa) notched the  game-winning goal at the 67th minute of the game. The Mustangs garnered 25 points in the voting  system. Winona State University received 162 points and nine first-place  votes to earn the top spot in the preseason poll. 

Including the  top pick as a team Winona State also received the NSIC's Preseason  Offensive Player of the Year in senior Lauren Sturdivant. The Mustangs will open camp with two-a-day practices starting on Aug. 16-20. Fall camp will include the two-a-day practices along with team meetings throughout the week until classes begin on Aug. 23. Morning practices will be held from 7:15 a.m. to 9 a.m. and the afternoon session begins at 6:30 p.m. and will conclude at 8:30 p.m.

Entering her third season at the helm of the soccer squad, Olson returns  14 letter-winners from the 2009 roster. The Mustangs will welcome six  incoming freshman to the 2010 roster when camp opens.
