SMSU Hosts 12th Annual Mustang Invite This Weekend

MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University women's golf team will host the 12th annual Mustang Invitational this Saturday, Sept. 26, and Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Marshall Golf Club.  The 36-hole invite begins at 12 p.m. on Saturday with 18 holes and will conclude with the final round beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday with a shotgun start.

Nearly 100 golfers are expected to compete from 14 teams including Southwest Minnesota State, Augustana, Concordia-Moorhead, Concordia-St. Paul, Gustavus, Manitoba, Minnesota State-Mankato, MSU Moorhead, Missouri Western State, Nebraska-Omaha, Upper Iowa, Wayne State, Winona State and Wisconsin-Eau Claire.  Individuals from Minnesota, Crookston and Northern State will also participate.

Upper Iowa is the defending team champion after finishing with a tournament record score of 612 (+36).  Erin Ommen from Nebraska-Omaha won the individual title with a tournament record 5-over-par 149.

This will be the third tournament this season for Southwest Minnesota State.  The Mustangs finished third at the nine-team Augustana Invite two weeks ago and finished seventh at the 13-team Concordia University Invite this past weekend.  Senior Melissa Lackas leads the team with a 78.0 stroke average and has finished tied for fourth and sixth in the first two tournaments.  Sophomore KC Kane ranks second on the squad with a 79.3 average and has finished tied for fourth and tied for 14th in the first two tournaments. 

SMSU’s five-person line-up for the weekend will consist of sophomore KC Kane (Buffalo, Minn.), senior Melissa Lackas (Independence, Iowa), freshman Krista Weiszhaar (Harwood, N.D.), junior Sarah Baukol (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) and junior Stephanie Bruns (Champlin, Minn.).  Freshmen Haley Gudim (Isle, Minn.), Sarah Wahlstrom (Sheldon, Iowa) and Katelyn Schwartz (New Ulm, Minn.) will all play as individuals.
