SMSU Rolls Urbana (Ohio); Second Game Scheduled for Today Canceled

BOX SCORE

KISSIMMEE, Fla.
- Southwest Minnesota State recorded a season-high 15 hits to top Urbana (Ohio) 17-1 in five innings Thursday morning at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.  SMSU will not play its second game today, which was scheduled for 1 p.m. against Tiffin (Ohio), due to poor weather conditions.

The Mustangs improve to 6-5, while UU drops to 5-4.

SMSU's 15 hits were scattered across eight players, while five Mustangs posted multi-hit games.

Kristin Braden drove in a team-high five runs and finished 2 for 4 at the plate.  Christine Borowiak went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, while Amy Dreessen and Meaghan Laetsch each collected three RBIs and finished 3 for 4 and 2 for 3, respectively.

Cortney Heim worked 4.1 innings on the mound en route to picking up her fourth win of the season.  The junior gave up just two hits and struck out seven batters.

Laetsch led off for SMSU and opened the bottom of the first by recording an infield single. One batter later, Dreesseen nailed a double to left center to score the game's first run.

Laetsch drove in another pair of runs in the second to move the Mustang advantage to 3-0.

But it was an eight-run third inning that set up the contest to end early.  The Mustangs used six hits--including a three-RBI double from Braden--to take a commanding 11-0 lead.

The Blue Knights managed one run in the fourth before the Mustangs again exploded offensively, recording six runs in the fifth to take a 17-1 lead.  Six hits, including a pair of two-RBI rips from Braden and Borowiak, highlighted the surge.

Had SMSU not held at least an eight-run advantage to end the contest early, the game would have likely been suspended until later this afternoon because of heavy rain that was hitting the Kissimmee area.

SMSU's game against Tiffin that was scheduled for 1 p.m. EST will not be made up.  The Mustangs will play Truman State and Wisconsin-Parkside tomorrow.
