2010 SMSU Golf Classic Registration
MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University Mustang Booster Club has announced that former Minnesota Twins manager, Tom Kelly, will be the featured speaker at the 25th annual SMSU Golf Classic on June 13-14, at the Marshall Golf Club.
The SMSU Golf Classic is a two-day event sponsored by the Mustang Booster Club, with all proceeds going to the SMSU athletic scholarship fund. The Sunday evening activities include social hour, silent and live auction, dinner and featured speaker, while on Monday the five-person scramble golf tournament begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Marshall Golf Club.
Cost for the entire two-day package is $175 per person and includes, along with the Sunday activities, 18 holes of golf, including cart, along with a golf shirt, hat, refreshments on the course, appetizers following the golf tournament and other great prizes. The package also includes two tickets to the social and dinner on Sunday night, two tickets for breakfast and one ticket for lunch on Monday during the golf tournament.
Individuals or couples who don't want to golf can still attend the social on Sunday night by purchasing social tickets. The social ticket includes dinner, silent and live auction, entertainment featuring emcee Dick Jonckowski and the featured speaker, Tom Kelly. Social hour begins at 5 p.m., with dinner to follow at 6 p.m. and the live auction and speaker starting at 7 p.m. Cost for the social-only ticket is $20 per person or $35 per couple.
Sponsorships are also available for businesses that which to donate for the classic. A full sponsorship includes five tickets to the entire event and includes a five-person golf team.
Kelly, who now serves as Special Assistant to the General Manager for the Minnesota Twins, spent 15 full seasons as the field manager for the Twins, leading the franchise to a pair of World Series championships in 1987 and 1991. The longest tenured manager in team history and Major League Baseball's Manager of the Year in 1991, Kelly recorded 1,140 career victories before retiring as manager following the 2001 season.
Born in Graceville, Minn., Kelly has a nearly 40-year association with the Twins organization. Kelly, who had a 13-year minor league playing career, spent part of the 1975 season playing with the Twins. After rising through the minor-league ranks as a coach and manager, Kelly became Minnesota's third-base coach in 1983, before being named manager on Sept. 12, 1986. Kelly began his professional baseball career as an eighth-round draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in 1968.
