INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Southwest Minnesota State baseball team and several individuals finished high in the final NCAA Division II baseball national statistics released earlier this month.
The SMSU offense finished the season ranking 37th in slugging percentage (.514), 40th in home runs per game (1.09), 43rd in batting average (.336) and 50th in home runs (51). The Mustang pitching staff finished the season ranked 34th in walks per nine innings (3.1), 49th in hit by pitch (65) and 52nd in earned run average (4.69).
SMSU had five individuals rank among the top 100 in offensive categories. Senior first baseman
Andrew Kinney ranked ninth in home runs per game (0.4), 13th in home runs (17), 25th in slugging percentage (.779), 83rd in RBI per game (1.14) and 89th in runs per game (1.17)
Junior designated hitter/infielder
Cody Curry ranked 49th in batting average (.424), 79th in on-base percentage (.500) and 79th in doubles per game (0.38),
Junior outfielder
Tyler Fayden ranked 34th in toughest to strikeout (17.4), 34th in hit by pitch per game (0.35), 37th in hit by pitch (16) and 79th in batting average (.414).
Senior outfielder
Derick Swenson finished 13th in hit by pitch (19) and 17th in hit by pitch per game (0.4), while junior shortstop
Tyler Jendro ranked 54th in toughest to strikeout (15.2).
The Mustang pitching staff had three individuals also ranked among the top 100. Senior
Adam Schrader ranked 78th in hits allowed per nine innings (8.0) and 95th in earned run average (3.28), senior
Jared Pick ranked 97th in wins (7), while junior
Tyler Jendro ranked 76th in saves (4).
Southwest Minnesota State University is a member of NCAA Division II and is located in Marshall, Minn. SMSU finished the 2010 season 29-18 overall, including 22-10 in the NSIC, tying for fourth place in the standings. The 29 victories is the fifth highest in school history. The Mustangs advanced to the championship game of the NSIC tournament before losing to Minnesota State 6-5.
