MANKATO, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University women's and men's track & field teams had a solid showing in day one of the Championships in Mankato, Minn.
Rylee Armstrong earned the first points of the day for the SMSU women's team with an eighth place finish in the high jump with a personal best mark of 1.63m. She also had a personal best 5.55m in the long jump to finish in fifth place.
Eisha Oden won her heat in the 400 meters with a time of 58.33—the fourth fastest out of 25 overall—to advance to Saturday's finals.
Hannah Palmeter also advanced to finals in the 1-mile with a time of 5:15.4, finishing third in her heat and eighth out of 29 overall.
Kim Shabino ran a time of 25.50 in the 200 meters to advance to the finals, while also running a school record 7.83 in the 60 meter prelims to finish in 12th place overall.
Angela Prokosch finished 15
th out of 38 in the weight throw with a mark of 14.4m, while Rhiannon Sears recorded a personal best 14.03m to place 17
th.
On the men's side,
Alex Weis placed fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 17.44m to earn five points for SMSU. Teammate
Jordan Flinn picked up one team point for the Mustangs placing eighth with a mark of 16.14.
Raphael Lawson-Gayle ran a personal best 6.9 in the 60 meters to advance to Saturday's finals. Lawson-Gayle also just missed earning SMSU points, finishing ninth place out of 21 in the long jump at 6.82m.
Also advancing to Saturday's finals was
Will Hanson, who won his heat on Friday in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.13.
Chris Kveseth will run in the finals of the 800 meters after recording a time of 1:59.76.
Dallin Finley just missed advancing to the finals of the 200 meters, placing ninth with a time of 22.68, while
Ben Ryan was 11
th with a time of 22.84.
Zach Jones led SMSU in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.63 to finish in 15
th place out of 28 runners.
The SMSU women's team has five points and is currently in 11
th place out of 13 teams, while the men's team has six points and is in 10
th place.
Day two of the championships will begin on Saturday with field events at 10 a.m. and track events at 1 p.m.
