ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Southwest Minnesota State University track & field teams had another strong showing with several first place finishes during the second day of the Northwestern College Open on Saturday.
On Friday,
Alex Weis and
Hannah Palmeter each recorded first place finishes to lead the men's and women's team respectively. On Saturday, both picked up first place finishes again, while
Kim Shabino and
Will Hanson also earned a first place finishes.
Shabino won the 100 meters with a time of 12.21, while Palmeter captured the 800 meters crossing the line with a school-record time of 2:17.84. Palmeter won the 5,000 meters on Friday afternoon.
Sarah Mayfield had a big race in the 800 meters, crossing in a time of 2:19.33 to finish in third place.
Rylee Armstrong recorded a jump of 5.53m in the long jump to finish second and placed fifth in the javelin at 33.72m, while
Nya Buom finished seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.55
Weis, who won the hammer throw on Friday, took home first place in the shot put with a mark of 16.15m. He also placed second in the discus with an NCAA provisional mark of 50.21.
Josh Behning also had a strong day finishing fourth in the discus with a personal best 48.92m.
Will Hanson also took home first place in the 110 meter hurdles, sprinting across with a time of 14.78.
Ben Ryan ran 22.36 in the 200 meters to finish fifth, while
Zach Jones placed ninth at 22.47. Jones also finished second in the triple jump at 13.01m and placed fourth in the long jump with a mark of 6.48m.
Jordon Janisch set a personal best of 58.92 in the 400 meter hurdles to finish in fourth place.
Southwest Minnesota State continues action next week competing at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, and the Drake Alternative in St. Peter, Minn.
