No. 13 SMSU Volleyball Takes Down No. 5 Truman State (Mo.) 3-1

Box Score

ST. PAUL, MINN.:
Senior Kasey Loeslie had a career-high 20 kills to lead No. 13 Southwest Minnesota State to a 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-14) win over No. 5 Truman State (Mo.) at the Concordia-St. Paul Classic on Saturday evening.  For the second time in two days, the Mustang volleyball team took down another top-10 team.

SMSU is now 11-1 on the season; Truman State drops to 9-3.

Loeslie's career high was accompanied by as solid a hitting performance the Mustangs have had this season.

Freshman Devin Diedrich destroyed a career-high 17 balls, while senior Laura Hegerle terminated another 12.  Freshman Maggie Geske was one kill short of double digits as she checked in with nine.

Setter Sara Graf directed SMSU's offensive attack; the junior had a season-high 57 assists and four service aces.

Libero Sarah Quiram continued her streak of well-played defensive matches as she finished with a match-high 22 digs.

Despite hitting the ball relatively well in the first set, SMSU was unable to counter Truman State's offensive weapons and lost the set.

From that point on, however, the Mustangs controlled the tempo.  SMSU never trailed in the second set, but it failed to fully carry that momentum into the third set.  Truman State's defense held the Mustangs to 12 kills in the set, but SMSU battled and was able to eventually take control with defense.

The fourth and finals set was all SMSU; the Mustangs used solid hitting and scrappy defense to grab a definitive double-digit lead.

Serving became the central storyline for the Mustangs as they served up eight aces in the match.

SMSU is back in action this Tuesday when they open conference play against Wayne State (Neb.).
