Devin Diedrich,
Tory Brouwer and
Mary Groth combined for 35 kills to lead No. 12 Southwest Minnesota State to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 28-26) victory Saturday night at the Radisson-Roseville/Concordia University Tournament in St. Paul, Minn.
The win caps a perfect 4-0 weekend for SMSU, which moves to 10-2; DC drops to 5-4.
The three-way attack of Diedrich, Brouwer and Groth accounted for more than 70 percent of SMSU's total kill output. Diedrich and Brouwer had 12 kills each, while Groth tallied 11.
Sara Graf notched a match-high 39 assists in the win.
As she did all weekend,
Kenzie Niesche led the Mustang defensive effort with a team-high 14 digs.
Diedrich and Groth combined for eight kills in the opening set, allowing SMSU to build a six-point lead midway through at 18-12. But DC roared back with to within one at 21-20 before SMSU closed on a 4-1 run to go ahead 1-0.
Dominance came in the form of a blazing .536 hitting performance on behalf of the Mustangs in the second set. Another eight kills from Diedrich and Groth and nine unanswered points by SMSU late in the set was good enough for a 14-point lead. A service ace from
Kasey Uran and smash from Diedrich clinched the set victory.
Facing a 23-20 deficit and the chance for a forced-fourth set, SMSU mounted its match-deciding comeback and forced extra points to take the set. Big kills from Diedrich, Brouwer and
Brooke Burmeister kept the Mustangs alive and ensured the sweep.
SMSU aced six serves and outkilled the Golden Lions 49-32.
SMSU will open NSIC play this Tuesday at home against Wayne State. First service is scheduled for 7 p.m.
