SMSU holds top spot in AVCA Top-25 for fourth straight week

LEXINGTON, Ky.- Southwest Minnesota State remains the top-ranked volleyball program in the nation according to the latest American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA) Top-25 poll which was released on Monday.

SMSU (15-0, 7-0 NSIC) is off to the best start to a season in school history and has tied the second longest win streak overall in program history. The 15 straight wins for SMSU is its longest win streak since winning 15 straight back in 2015.

SMSU has gone 8-0 against the AVCA Top-25 so far this season and has averaged 15.3 kills per set as a team with a .280 attack percentage in those eight matches. The Mustangs also averaged 2.03 blocks per set while holding opponents to a .194 hitting percentage against the AVCA's Top-25.

The Mustangs have now been ranked in the Top 25 for 153 consecutive polls, dating back to Sept. 5, 2006, and have made it into the Top 10 for 57 consecutive polls.

SMSU again garnered 47 first place votes in this week's poll after wins over St. Cloud State and No. 6 Minnesota Duluth at home this past weekend.

No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul (14-1) and No. 6 Minnesota Duluth (13-2) remained in the same spot as last week's poll and were the only two other NSIC schools in this week's top-10 teams.

No. 13 Northern State (13-2) and No. 14 Winona State (11-4) which traded spots in this week's poll while No. 17 Augustana (12-5) remained in the same spot as last week.

No. 21 Wayne State (10-6) moved up one position this week and Upper Iowa continued to receive votes however was unable to break the top-25 in this week's poll. Sioux Falls also received votes this week to make it nine total teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conferene to receive votes in this week's AVCA Top-25 poll.

Southwest Minnesota State will travel to play at MSU Moorhead and No. 13 Northern State this weekend as it looks to extend its 15-match win streak.
