SMSU volleyball moves to No. 2 in AVCA Top-25

LEXINGTON, Ky.- Southwest Minnesota State women's volleyball, following a win over top-ranked Concordia-St. Paul in the NSIC Tournament championship match, has moved up to No. 2 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA) Top-25 poll that was released on Monday.

SMSU (28-3) moves up two spots from last week's poll, garnering 13 first-place votes to finish behind the new No. 1 ranked team, California Baptist, which finished with 27 first-place votes.

Concordia-St. Paul (3) moved down two spots following Sunday's against SMSU in the NSIC title match. Minnesota Duluth (7), dropped one spot but remained in the top-10 following an NSIC semifinal loss to Concordia-St. Paul.

Northern State (11), following a loss in the quarterfinal round of the NSIC Tournament, dropped out of this week's top-10. Winona State (13) moves up one spot from last week's poll while (16) Augustana remained in the same position.

(22) Wayne State was the seventh and final NSIC school ranked in the top-25 while still Upper Iowa received votes.

The Mustangs have now been ranked in the Top-25 for 160 consecutive polls, dating back to Sept. 5, 2006, and have made it into the Top-10 for 64 consecutive polls. SMSU has also been ranked in the AVCA Top-5 in the previous 27 polls dating back to last year's preseason poll.

SMSU, which earned an automatic bid into the NCAA  Tournament after its NSIC Tournament win, will await its official seeding for the NCAA Central Region Tournament which will be announced on Monday night.

The NCAA Division II volleyball tournament selection show will air tonight via webcast at NCAA.com starting at 6:30 p.m. CST. The top eight teams in each of the eight regions will earn a berth to the 64-team NCAA Division II volleyball tournament.
