Mustangs bounce back with four-set win at St. Cloud State

Box Score
ST. CLOUD, Minn.- Taylor Reiss led SMSU in kills for a fifth straight match with 23 kills and a .302 hitting percentage as second ranked Southwest Minnesota State (25-3, 15-3 NSIC) rebounded from a first set loss in a 21-25, 25-19, 25-10, 25-19 win over St. Cloud State (16-12, 8-10 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon in Halenbeck Hall.

Reiss' also added 20 digs for her fifth 20-20 match of the season and her 13th double-double on the year. Reiss has reached the 20 kill mark nine matches and also added three block assists and two solo blocks in Saturday's win.

Kaylee Burmeister had 12 kills and 16 digs for her 12th double-double of the season while Megan Larson posted her 10th double-double with 50 assists and 10 digs in addition to four kills and four total blocks.

Brooke Borchardt had just one block assist in the match but added 11 kills for the Mustangs. Sarina Smith contributed five block assists and seven kills for SMSU.

Erin Corrigan reached 17 digs on the defensive end while libero, Dani Potter, finished with 20 digs in addition to two service aces.

SMSU won the first three points of the match but SCSU responded as the match remained close early. The first set saw five total lead changes before St. Cloud State went on a 6-1 run to win the set after trailing at 20-19.

The Mustangs went on an 11-4 run to take control of the second set and held a 22-15 lead after a Huskies' serving error and a kill from Burmeister for back-to-back SMSU points. SCSU would win four of the next five rallies before kills from Burmeister and Reiss helped to even the match at 1-1.

SMSU throttled the Huskies in set three as SCSU was forced to take a timeout down 7-1 before a trio of Hukies' attack errors made the score 11-2. A short run from St. Cloud State forced an SMSU timeout  which was followed by a dominant 13-2 run from the Mustangs to give SMSU the third set win and a 2-1 lead in the match.

St. Cloud State led the fourth set 10-6 before a Burmeister kill started a 6-2 run to even the set at 12-12. The Mustangs would then go on another 6-1 run to go ahead 18-15 and never looked back as Reiss, Burmeister and Borchardt combined for 15 kills in the final set to help SMSU to another 25-19 win.

The Mustangs will now look ahead to their final two matches of the regular season as they'll return to the PE Gym to take on Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State on Friday and Saturday respectively.
