LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Southwest Minnesota State University women's volleyball team remains at No. 2 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll released on Monday following a 4-0 weekend to start the season this past weekend.
Fellow NSIC competitor and reigning National Champions, Concordia-St. Paul, received 1,197 points with 45 first place votes to maintain the nation's No. 1 ranking after also starting the season 4-0 last weekend. SMSU received 1,131 total points with three first place votes after defeating No. 11 Wheeling Jesuit, North Alabama, Southern Indiana, and West Florida.
SMSU is one of seven NSIC schools ranked in the AVCA Top 25 this week with No. 7 Minnesota Duluth (3-1) and No. 9 Augustana (3-1) also cracking the Top 10.
No. 12 Wayne State (3-1) moved up one spot from the year's first poll while No. 13 Winona State (2-2) drops eight spots.
The final NSIC school to make it into the nation's top-25, No. 23 Northern State (3-1), improves one spot in this week's poll.
The Mustangs have now been ranked in the Top 25 for 149 consecutive polls, dating back to Sept. 5, 2006, and have made it into the Top 10 for 53 consecutive polls.
The Mustangs are now off to a 1-0 start against ranked teams this season and will play at least two ranked opponents next week.
SMSU will travel to Denver, Colo., this weekend for the annual Colorado Premier Challenge where they are scheduled to play No. 20 Tampa and No. 8 Ferris State.
The Mustangs will play Tampa at 12 p.m., will then face Ferris State at 7 p.m., followed by the bracket stage of the tournament on Saturday.
